There they go, throwing shade all over the spring season. And this time, that overcast comes with the flavor of blackberries that layer over a German styled sour ale with gentle additions of sea salt for heft and roundness.
MadTree's Shade, Blackberry Tart edition pours with a hazy lavender color and a fluffy ivory froth. Blueberry aromas abound along with the tangy underling scent of citrus, cider, wine and an overall wine cooler character. Moderately sweet and wheaten, the bready taste of pastry crust comes with aspects of saltwater taffy and nectar.
The sweetness slowly relaxes and the sourness pulls slightly ahead for a moderately sour tone that brings a brightness to the robust blackberry flavors. Lemon, apple, white grape and under ripened berries all complete the bulk of flavors while the roundness of sea salt brings a gentle brine to the late palate.
Low in bitter, the medium bodied beer carries a not-so dry an not-so sweet taste through a somewhat watery texture that extends on the palate with a sensation of flat wine spritzers and kool-aid. Where they understand the genuine character of the gose style, the beer simply falls a little flat.
