Experimentation with "cryo" hops allows MadTree brewers to play with different hop varieties that have been cryogenically frozen in order to preserve more of their flavor and aroma intensity. The infusion of hops into an imperial IPA is definitely a taste worth paying a hefty price.
Cryo Currency teases the nose with the plumpness of candied orange, citrus, tropical and stone fruits soon after a pour of deep amber, haze and a blanket of froth. A late herbal scent soon leads into a taste of caramel, honey and pecan in a most granola kind of way.
With a slight stickiness of malt extending on the middle palate, its sweetness allows for a candied coat of flavor to the fruity hop components; all amplifying the taste of mandarin orange, red grapefruit, apricot and pineapple. Along with an herbal backdrop of lemon verbena, sun tea, and grassy botanicals, the hops trend bitter, spicy and resinous.
Medium full on the palate, the hefty hoppy beer brings out a botanical spice of gin with a chivy bite while the grain sugars continue to dispel. A long and bitter linger makes the beer hop dominant through and through. There might be too much of a malt influence from its imperial status to fully understand what the cryohops are giving. Also its off-70 IBU status diminishes the hoppy rewards as well.
