Bringing a sweeter side to the mundane brew day, Laura Amos' work is showcased in a salted caramel American Stout in MadTree's Undersotry Series that highlights various employees through beer. This 11th installment might just show Laura's saltier side.
Breaming with caramel, chocolate and coffee aromas, strong suggestions of fresh baking brownies and tiramisu starts to shine. Very dark brown and crowned with a tarnish froth, A Little Salty starts off with a rounded and caramel sweet maltiness laced with cream, chocolate, toffee and toast.
As the stout opens up, its sweeter influences hold firmly onto the middle palate, slow to relax. Trending coffee and nutty, those brownie and coffee desserts turn robust, savory and modestly bitter. The undercurrent of caramel, cream and latte keep the beer balanced against the growing woodsy bitterness for a lighter take on pastry stout.
Full in body but with also a relaxed demeanor, the Stout finishes long, robust and toasty-sweet. It is kept fuller and rounded by the soft salinity that brings the flavors together and keep them alive in a long, fat and savory after palate, and a light kiss of kahlua for safe keeping.
