Poured from a large bottle (500 mL?) into a pilsner. Color is the deep amber of honey. It produces an exuberant head and lovely lacing. Aroma is caramel, hops and yeast.
Flavor is caramel, a bit sweet, and hops. Mouthfeel is creamy, thick, and burns a bit.
Overall this is beyond outstanding--a world class barley wine.

Appearance - Pours a crystal clear, dark amber color with a finger's worth of khaki head. Good retention, leaving behind a broken layer of suds across the surface. Fair lacing with good stick.
Smell - Bread and raisin are most prominent, along with an underlying spice hop and caramel aroma.
Taste - Hits first with a strong raisin sweetness and moderate caramel, then follows nicely with strong underlying breadiness and a nicely placed hop spice. Faint citrus rind bitterness and a trace of chocolate and roasted malt in the finish.
Mouthfeel - Full body with moderate carbonation. Lightly syrupy. Smooth, easy drinking barleywine. 10%? Doesn't hit like it.
Overall - Great barleywine. Smoothest, easiest drinking BW I've had since Bell's Third Coast. Fairly similar, actually. Not quite as fruity as the aforementioned, but this baby does the style justice, and then some. One that I think would age amazingly. Another feather in the cap for American River. They're killing it right now. $5 bomber at Bel-Air? YES PLEASE!
