It's very difficult to read the date code on the lip of the bottom of the can but it appears to read: "PKGD 11/30/20"
Appearance: The body is black and it has a fizzy, khaki head that settles down a bit in the glass and maintains well in the glass. Good retention, small spots of lacing.
Aroma: There are notes of black licorice and cola with a slightly burnt and acrid scent.
Taste: Up front it tastes like black licorice with a light bit of cola and touch of cocoa. Towards the middle of the mouth there is a little more cocoa. Towards the back of the mouth there is a touch of bitter baker's chocolate and some light flavor of burnt bread. The aftertaste is alcohol with a touch of caramel.
Mouthfeel: The body feels medium-low in body but overall thin in texture as if it is missing something. Some sips the body feels better than others but it usually finishes feeling a bit thin. Carbonation feels fine. There is some bitterness to the beer which feels like a combination of baker's chocolate and kilned malt. There is an alcohol presence in the beer that it doesn't do a great job of hiding.
Overall: The can states that this is a "STOUT BREWED WITH COCOA NIBS, BROWN SUGAR, AND LACTOSE." The last two ingredients don't play a major part but there is some chocolate flavor to the beer, which mostly comes across as bitter baker's chocolate. The beer is alright; it's drinkable enough that I wouldn't turn one down, but it's not something I'd buy again or tell people to buy. The cola and black licorice characters seem out of place in this beer although there is nothing on the can to indicate that this is derived from any spices.
