Rum Barrel-Aged Imperial Sour with Orange, Pineapple, and Coconut. Aged for 3 months in rum barrels. Last year The Castaway was only fruited with pineapple. While delicious, we wanted to one-up ourselves. For this 2020 version we added orange and coconut to make a delicious painkiller inspired fruited sour.

Clear, orange color. Medium-sized, white head. Orange, pineapple, and light coconut in the cocktail-like aroma. Tart and super easy to drink considering the ABV.

Nucleated Tulip
Look: Dark orange in color, pouring a 1 finger head, off white in color. Dissipated to a thin ring with lacing
Smell: Sweet toasted coconut, pineapple and a hint of orange. Slight oaky note.
Taste: Toasted coconut with fresh orange juice which leads to pineapple tartness. Finish contains oaky notes and pineapple
Feel: Light-mod body with a clean finish
Overall: Really good beer. Interesting and very complex

First off , Wow . This is the first sour I have ever tried . I love the style . Poured the can into a 12oz snifter .

L: It looks orange , looks somewhat clear . There’s dim lighting where I’m at though . The head dissipates instantly and leaves a very thin - to somewhat almost absent lacing .

S: Lots of orange, pineapple , and coconut. I also smell the rum barrels . It smells so good .

T: Tons of orange and pineapple up front . As well as a lot of coconut . On the finish too . I also taste the spices from the rum barrels on the finish . It’s very tart . May not be everyone’s style but this is simply delicious . I cannot believe this is 9.12% abv .

F: It’s a light bodied beer . Very tart and the perfect amount of carbonation to accompany the tartness . Dry finish .

Overall this beer is just simply delicious. May not be everyone’s style , I myself have never tried a sour . First one . But I thoroughly enjoyed it . I will definitely buy this again every chance I get . Cheers

Poured from a can into a stemless wine glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden-yellow color with a tiny fizzy white head. The head fades almost instantly leaving no lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is rather heavy of a pineapple and orange smell mixed with notes of coconut and green apple. Along with these aromas comes almost a chocolate like smell mixed with a bit of cane sugar, rum, and wood. I many ways in has an aroma like a pina colada.
Taste – The taste begins with a sour green apple and apple cider vinegar flavor mixed with light pineapple and orange flavors. As the taste advances the sourness is enhanced by some lemon and a touch of almost sour patch kid like sourness. All the while the pineapple gets more intense all while some coconut comes onto the scene. For a rum aged brew the rum flavor is rather light, just coming onto the scene at the end, where the mix of flavors leaves a rather tropical sour taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is slightly thicker and more chewy with a carbonation level that is very low. A little higher carbonation level may have been slightly better for the sour flavors, but overall, the feel was pretty decent for the abv, and the fruity cocktail flavors.
Overall – A rather decent and strong sour. The tropical flavors and pina colada like flavors meld well with the sour lemon, green apple and apple cider vinegar and create a rather interesting balance amongst themselves.

Looks beautiful, smells like Summer. Very floral nose, with loads of coconut, and a background of oranges. Don't get any of the barrel that I can tell.

Taste is super sour, almost too much (only almost). Very floral taste, with loads of coconut and orange juice, with a hint of pineapple on the back. Again, no hints from the barrel that I can distinguish. Unfortunately, the beer tastes very soapy (autolysis?). Like straight dish soap. That soapiness really kills the beer, and it's just not enjoyable.

A bit bummed, because I always look forward to Martin House special releases.

Summer in a glass. Cloudy bright yellow pour with a white head. Indeed does smell and taste like a painkiller with two flairs, the lesser one being the rum and molasses tones, the larger one being a slightly sour tang from the fruits. Feel is bright, medium bodied, tangy, lightly sour, and hides the booze very well.

This painkiller rendition comes through straight out of a rum barrel. The pucker is strong with this beer pulling it deep into the sour category. Expecting the rum to be dark but actually mimics the notes of Malibu.

Ordered from Tavour in a 12 ounce can, Chilled and poured into a hurricane.

Look: Dark yellow, opaque and slightly cloudy. Light foamy head that dissipated quickly leaving a super light and thin ring of foam that didn’t hang very long.
Smell: Citrus up front, coconut lingers and is very aromatic, pineapple and rum notes, oaky and barrel notes hanging in the background. Super floral notes from front to back.
Taste: Super citrus up front with BIG coconut, followed by sour notes, rum and oaky wood notes that persist in the nose. Pineapple comes mid palate, backend notes are combined notes of rum, oak, citrus and pineapple (definitely a pain killer). The coconut lingers and lingers and lingers and…. The booze is well hidden for a 10%. There is no bitter and no hop. Flavors mellow as it warmed, and the citrus and coconut stand out more.
Feel: Light, crisp and refreshing. Carbonation is medium and lingers as it warmed.

Overall super interesting beer. The smell is definitely rum barrel and big coconut. The only issue with this beer is how floral the beer is because of the combination of the coconut and citrus. The beer was a soapy, which wasn’t pleasant.

Cheers!

Pours a cloudy golden yellow color with a finger width foamy head. Head retention is mild. Lacing is good. Has a big pineapple and coconut aroma with some tartness. Taste is the same with pineapple on the beginning and coconut on the end. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Big tartness with mild sourness. Very good.
