Imperial Stout with Coconut
If there’s one thing we love doing more than fruited sours, it’s brewing up these big, boozy, roasty, chocolate stouts. Astronaut Apocalypse is a thick imperial stout brewed with flaked coconut. Fans of Colombiana will definitely enjoy this Christmas treat.

Black as night with a fairly small head.
Pounding on the coconut all the way. Roasty, toasty and burnt fill in the blanks for my idea of an imperial Stout.
Although I admit the name influenced my decision to buy it, this is Martin house, and their track record warrants such decisions.

Nose has the coconut and chocolate as expected, immensely! Head was almost reddish brown tan. Taste was just as immense as the nose, yet very smooth. Afterwards I felt a little tinge, almost like it had some capsaicin, but it doesn't to my knowledge.

Fantastic pour, with an earthy black body and medium brown aggressive head, which settles into a thin ring throughout the drink. Smell is of coconut and roasted malts, maybe some marshmallow. Taste is predominately coconut, and not a 'natural' pleasing coconut but more of an artificial additive. Kind of a cheap taste... Feel is okay, maybe a touch thin for a stout. Not a great stout, not a drain pour, but somewhere in between. It was less than $3 a can, so not a bad deal, but if I am looking for a more pleasing stout, I would pass this one by.

Had this beer on tap at a local pub. Shared it with a good friend after a hockey game.
Nice look with a dark brown body and a creamy brown head and good lacing. Smell and taste of coconut and chocolate, very Almond Joy-like. Maybe a bit too much. Overall a n enjoyable stout on a cold night.

Appearance; A staggeringly large, incredibly dense and persistent cocoa-colored head rides atop a dark amber body. No highlights can be seen, even at the narrowest point of the glass and before a strong light. Fat bubbles cling to the glass wall in clumps, like diamonds embedded in dark earth. The lacing presents as scattered patches of foam about the glass wall.
Aroma: The aroma is over the top, with massive amounts of coconut and bitter cocoa, freshly ground coffee, vanilla and a little sweet caramel. There is not the slightest intimation of the quite high ABV of twelve percent. The aroma is reminiscent of a dark chocolate coconut bon-bon.
Taste: Upon tasting, there is a massive surge of dark and sweet chocolate and a considerable wave of coconut. While this is lesser to the chocolate, it is still very prominent. The alcohol offers a subtle sweet and spicy note, although its presence is felt in its warmth, more than it is tasted. Soon after, there is a surge of molasses. Later in the taste, milk chocolate rises. Towards the close, There is a surge of bitter cocoa, with the finish being rather dry, with a lingering, mild note of earth.
Mouth feel: Smooth and full, very soft, more like cream than beer, with the slightest hint of carbonation.
Drinkability/notes: A stunning dessert beer, the appellation "over the top" seem inadequate, and worthy of pairing with the finest chocolate confections, or served alone. Once again, Martin House has done very well.
Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce aluminum can, served in a La Fin du Monde Tulip.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown, nearly black color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head fades rather slowly over time, leaving a bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Upon swirling the brew in the snifter, sticky fingers of the brew are seen clinging to the glass, showing off the bigness of the brew, with the fingers slowly receding back to the bottom of the vessel.
Smell – The aroma is huge of a milk chocolate and coconut smell mixed with lots of vanilla, molasses, and caramel. Along with these smells comes some lightly roasted coffee and charred malt, as well as some notes of crème and milk. Overall, the aroma is akin to a mounds bar, inviting one to sip with each waft.
Taste - The taste begins with a nice roasty and toasty flavor with a huge showing of milk chocolate and a good dose of coconut. At the same time there is a good showing of vanilla and crème, both of which grow slightly more intense as the taste moves forward. All the while a little bit of char and coffee also join as with some thick fudge like flavors and some light nut and smoke joining in as well. With an increase in the coffee and the milk chocolate throughout, and a little bit of a warming boozy taste coming in at the very end, one is left with a fudgy coconut brownie like taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is medium. Overall, the thick and chewy feel is fantastic for the rich dessert flavors of the brew and make this on a nice slow sipper.
Overall – A very rich, super flavorful, and yet still rather approachable, non-cloying and delicious brew.
