A beer designed after Samoa (Carmel DeLite) cookies
Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden amber color with a thick head of white foam. The head has a good level of retention, with it fading over time and leaving tons of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is big of a coconut crème smell mixed with a big showing of caramel and toffee. Along with these smells comes notes of vanilla and some shortbread like smells. Other aromas of cocoa and vanilla crème smell mixed with some doughy and cake like aromas. Along with these comes notes nut and a bit of marshmallow. It does smell very akin to a Samoa cookie.
Taste – The taste begins with a biscuit malt flavor mixed with some caramel sweetness. Mixed with these tastes is a decent showing of coconut and vanilla, as well as a touch of cocoa. While the flavor does get sweeter as the taste advances, it is much less sweet than I would have anticipated form the smell. Toward the end of the taste transition on the tongue some marshmallow like flavors as well as a bit of toffee join in. With a bit of increase in the cocoa and some light graininess, one is left with a nice, moderately sweet, and rather flavorful vanilla coconut crème ale taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – For a 6 % abv brew the feel is full-bodied with a lower carbonation level. For the cookie characteristics that the brew is trying to mimic, the feel is quite well done, making it more dessert like.
Overall – A rather tasty crème ale. After I first smelt the brew, I was worried that it was going to be overly sweet, but was happily surprised when it was more approachable (although still moderately sweet as a crème ale often would be.) Certainly, a fun one to try and one I would have again.
