this is a style that rarely moves me, but this is a good one. what i like the most about it is how it packs in a lot of flavor and all the textural weight of a much more substantial beer, but keeps the alcohol at a level that allows me to have a couple and keep my head on straight. it pours a clearish amber color from the tap, pushing brick red, with lighter honey hues in the light and a short lived off white head. it smells and tastes like toasted and kilned red malts, slightly sweet but less caramelized than some, richer grains to start with rather than a longer boil it seems to me. hints of almond, toffee, and toast are there as well. smooth in feel with some sweetness, but its plenty manageable. light apple fruitiness, honey, and a long finish that has a european flare without being yeasty, smokey, or any of the other things we sometimes associate with the style, and in the end, this is a big malty amber brew with a lot of character but a surprisingly high degree of drinkability. not my favorite from these guys, but if you like red beers, this is sure to satisfy.
