Finally i can make a review of the last Westvleteren. I have had this one quit some time ago but i had lost the notes i made. Just found them back!

I got a bottle in a trade with Bartjebeergeek at least a year ago. Had it for a while in my beerstock and drank it with someone...but forgot who....

The beer was at least 20 year old but on the cap no dateinfo. Popped the cap with a slight sss and then poured it in an old Westvleteren chalice, a one in which they were poured in those days. Very dark with no carbonation left and no head. Heavy portnote and still very well drinkable...

What a privilege to taste this beer. Beers like these are so rare I am very blessed to have gotten my hands on this beer. Drank from my St Sixtus 1960's chalice. This beer is from 1981 and was stored under perfect conditions. I believe that the ABV was reduced to 10.6% in the mid 80's and then to 10.2% in the 90's which is what we have available today.

A - Pours a thick oily dark mahogany colour. So much darker than the Westvleteren 12 of today. The head has long gone.

S - Massive barrel port aromas that are incredibly strong, almost like a lion locked up for so long before being released. Plenty of fruit and malt also. Top marks !

T - Here goes ! Wow, very tart barrel aged flavours that really attack the tongue. The port flavour is so dominant. The malts and dark fruits are still very present. The balance is astounding, and this beer is still so very drinkable. A testament to its quality. The booze is non existent and absolutely no oxidisation. It is very hard to mark this beer down for standing the test of time for so long.

M - Silky full body with little carbonation. So very smooth.

O - To open and drink beers like this is what I believe is a true lifetime experience. This is a true masterpiece. I will drink half of this before infusing with a fresh Westy 12, I was told by a Westy Guru that this revives the beer, of course that is impossible to rate. As a standalone beer this is very impressive. I have another two which I will review in 10 and 20 years time.
