32oz growler, poured into an Our Brewing Company shaker pint glass.
The beer pours a clear, dark amber color, hues of orange and copper with a thin, soapy, white head, maybe a finger high with decent retention that yields nice rings of soapy lace. The aroma is very malt forward, strong amber malts, some rich sweetness and hearty graininess while a powerful bitter backbone of piney hops with light grapefruit peel. The flavors mirror well, plenty of amber malts, lots of caramel and vienna malt, lightly sweet, but the hoppy bitterness gets some extra amplitude from the grains. The hops bring forth the same piney and resinous flavors found in the nose, the grapefruit peel is more pronounced but there is little else there. The balance is nicely struck, but it feels a lot more bitter than the stated 75 IBUs. The mouthfeel is okay, sticky at times, but a bit light and thin at the finish, fails to coat the mouth well and but the finish is quite dry.
Verdict: A decent red IPA, perhaps more of a bitter amber ale in reality, malt forward but not without hoppy bitterness. Not the most creative or exciting beer, but refreshing and enjoyable nonetheless.
