I picked up a 1.0l bottle of this at Liebick in Germering on 23SEP14. It wasn't cheap,
setting me back €21.99, but I said WTF and moved on... I opted to quaff it on a visit to
Rothenburg od T on 26SEP14, as a tribute to some dear friends from that village who
have moved on....
Grabbed a seat in Rothenburgs Burggarten, popped the bottle and enjoyed... It was a deep chestnut/mahogany, a touch cloudy, and possessed a creamy beige head. The topping vanished in a snap, save for some rim action and a little lace. Had a malty nose with dark fruit, like raisins and dates. Also seemed to smell a touch tinny. It had a medium body, and was fairly smooth save for a light touch of prickle.
Very malty, with some caramel, brown sugar, raisins, dates and currants. Rather sweet though not cloying at all, with minimal hopping evident. It was like a sherry, strong and warming. Yes, it was pricey, but as a toast to my late friends, Herr und Frau Gärtner, it was worth every penny. Prosit!
