Loyly is a Minnesota take on a traditional Northern European Sahti. It is brewed utilizing a hand hewn kuurna (hollowed out log) with juniper branches and juniper berries. The beer takes its name from the Finnish word fro the heat and steam that envelops you while in the sauna.

am still trying to describe the beer to myself. Smoky? Yes. Farmhouse funky? Yup. Oaky, spicy, malty. Vegetal flavors from juniper root. An odd duck of a beer… or do I need to try more? Cheers

Clear, orange / brown pour and glass appearance; dense and lively carbonation; decent head, off-white, dense, lasting. Robust and earthy sweetness to the nose; orange, pine resin, berries. Sweet malt base flavor; woody herbal sensation; spruce tips; bold, herbal bitterness emerges at the finish. Heavy body; somewhat flat; near oily consistency; mild stickiness.

This is a very nice change of beer pace for me. This will be the third sahti beer I've rated on BA. I will say a lot more sediment appeared as I poured out the remains of the can, giving the beer a more cloudy appearance. The taste really grew on me as I drank more of the beer, too. I am currently at a loss of better words to describe the beer, other than it is a glorious experience, rich and robust taste and feel. I feel that lovers of brown ales or Baltic porters would go for this style of beer, and this beer in particular.

16 oz can into a Becher glass.
L: Pours a deep mahogany color with low carbo, a 1" creamy beige head that recedes to very thin edge foam, almost no lacing.
S: Smoky grains & malts, brown bread crust, caramelization.
T: Toasted smoky malts, grains, a good note of brown bread dough, light marmalade, distant resin, it has a green wood halo like stump water.
F: Flat, severely smooth & creamy slightly thick heavy bodied mouthfeel with a heavy center and a slow smooth lightly dry finish.
O: A Smoky malty heavy feeling beer with a very good taste that isn't too bold. It's kind of close to a Marzen with even less hops. Smooth & flat and very good in its style.

From a 16oz can with no date on it.
This is a beautiful dark amber pouring beer. It is dark, but looks fairly clear when I hold it to the light. There's a 1 inger tan colored head. The bubbles in the head are so damn tiny, it looks like a fluffy tan cloud. The head retention is great. There's no lacing on my glass.
The aroma is such a beautiful smoke aroma, a light bonfire going off in my glass. A very woody smell to the smoke.
Taste is a bit sweet up front. I get some banana flavors, but not like a wheat beer banana, but actual banana. The banana flavor fades into a beautiful light smoke flavor. Nice hint of a woody flavor also on the backside.
Very smooth and creamy feeling. Somewhat soft feeling. The hint of smoke lingers a bit in my throat.
Damn This is an unusual beer, but so damn tasty. I am so glad we got this drop from them.

Mostly clear "iced tea brown" (back-light gives it a bit of a reddish tinge) with gentle carbonation, topped by a ¾ inch, thick, off-white head with fairly short retention. Thick sheets of lacing are left as I tip the glass.

Smells of light smoke and north woods pine backed by a bready malt.

My first taste... I'm not sure what I've got here. None of the promised smoke, and little of the evergreen. It has a light sour flavor, but not the tartness that might be expected from a farmhouse beer. Kind if like sour malts. I know that sounds bad, but it is not. It's actually OK, but kind of bizarre. I just don't know how to describe it. No bitterness at all. The malts provide a good backing to the other flavors, but even after several sips, I'm struggling to describe it. At the half-way point, I'm now getting the juniper / evergreen flavors. The aftertaste is mild, malts, and (finally) evergreen.

Body is moderate and smooth.

Overall, an unusual beer. It's not one I'd buy again.

My expectation was for a mildly tart farmhouse ale, and I was hoping to have it with the Thanksgiving meal. I may still, but it just doesn't have the tartness I was hoping for.

16oz can. No dating information found.
Medium amber, birch brown colored body. Thin light tan head which fizzles. Spots of lacing.
Aroma of campfire smoke, smoked meat, juniper, and dark fruit.
Taste is less smoky than the smell but is still there. Flavors are more woody from the juniper and there are additional dark berries that are more tart than sweet. Lots of conifer forest influences in the aftertaste.
A little thinner than medium for the mouth feel. Okay carbonation.
A very North Woods beer that is more savory than sweet but still delicious. Kudos to Hammerheart.

From a 16oz can:

Appearance: Hazy brown-amber, good head.

Smell: Dark fruit, wood, touch of smoke.

Taste: Complex and interesting! Mild sweetness, earthy, touch of herbal medicine, mild tart berries.

Overall: I don't have any other Sahti's to compare this to, but Loyly is a very interesting beer. Malty and earthy, reminds me some of a dubbel or Belgian quad. Nice change of pace from more and more IPAs.

Pours a clear dark vibrant garnet colour. Fruity robust nose, red currants and fresh cherry, slightly medicinal and herbaceous. Bright tart astringent berry notes, dry smokey finish. Medium-bodied, herbal, juniper, a bit woody and smokey.
