Alderwood-Smoked Amber Lager Brewed with Juniper Berries

Immigration is a part of Minnesotan culture. Pictured here is a drawing of the Prast Hus at the Gammelgarden, one of the earliest Scandinavian settlements in the state. This beer was brewed using Lutra, a pseudo-lager Kveik strain with Sainnhus malted Alderwood-smoked barley produced by Sugarcreek Malting, and then run through a hand hewn kuurna filled with juniper and brewed with juniper berries.

Smoke dominates the aroma, although the aroma overall is not too strong. A nice campfire smoke, backed by roasted malts.

The body is coffee brown, clear, with ample carbonation. It is topped by a short off-white tending toward tan head, very thick and creamy, with decent retention.

The taste also brings the smoke at the initial taste, carrying through the middle and remaining on the tongue in the finish and aftertaste. As with the aroma, it is a campfire smoke, perhaps with hints of smoked meat, but only hints. The juniper/pine flavors hit immediately on the initial taste as well, transporting me to memories of campfires in the north woods. The roasted malts poke through in the middle bringing a bit of earthiness along. The finish and aftertaste are smoky and mildly bitter. The bitterness does grow in the aftertaste as I drink.

The mouth feel is on the thin side, but with sufficient body for the style.

Overall, a well-done smoked lager. It is definitely the smokiest of the Hammerhearts that I have tried. Even so, I am enjoying this one a lot.

16oz can. No dating information found.
Cloudy, dark amber colored body. Pale amber when back lit. One finger of off white head, which recedes to a creamy cap. Leaves incomplete wall of lacing on the non-drinking side and spots of lacing on the close to face side.
Aroma of sweet wood smoke, and a hint of smoked pork. Some juniper comes through as the beer warms.
Taste is more expressive than the smell. Dry roasted and smoked malts, with some sweetness. Juniper and lemon citrus. Has a flavor close to black tea/coffee. Aftertaste has a dry bitterness.
Mouthfeel seems to be thinner than medium. Good carbonation.
Drinking this brings up a vision of a low ceiling, smoky tap room surrounded by North Woods juniper trees. Confidently brewed with not often encountered ingredients (totally Nordic).

Slightly murky. Amber shows up when held to the light, otherwise a bit like a root beer with a slight reddish tint. Thin, but long lasting head. Really nice lacing.

Aroma is smoke, smoke and more smoke. I don't say this critically. I think this smells fantastic. It reminds me of a slow burning campfire, and it comes out of the glass in waves.

Taste also has plenty of smoke, but it's not overwhelming (again, if you like smoked beers....if you don't, move along) It's very drinkable, with a feel that almost strikes me as slightly odd. It has a Guinness-esq creaminess, while still managing to feel a little thin. Overall, I'm definitely enjoying this one.

Can. Khaki head with lace. Dark autumn brown color.

A nice smoked profile. A lot of bacon and smoked wood flavor. Bitter. Orange citrus and a touch of grapefruit. The juniper berries provide a very herbal/earthy flavor. Finishes with some resin and bittering hops.

From a 16oz can:

Appearance: Unfiltered brown, ok head.

Smell: Roasted malt, then smoke--sliced ham with a nice sweet note to it.

Taste: Mild sweetness, smoke flavor of caramelized ham, some roasted malt that almost goes to black coffee. Ash and smoke in the finish.

Overall: Hammerheart has another winner here with this amber/brown smoked lager. The alderwood smoke gives a distinct sweetness that oak or beechwood smoke does not. Nice roasted malt and coffee flavors. Excellent!
