16oz can with no visible freshness or canned on date (label even says "Check date on can for freshness".
Opened 4-11-20.
2 finger dense, beige head. Good retention at 1 finger of thick foam. Amber / brown colored ale when held to the light. Early lacing as the head falls slowly. Good looking beer. Wispy lace patterns.
Getting roasted malt, earthiness, mild coffee all mingled with a citrusy hop aroma. Hint of smoke. Intriguing aroma.
Taste is very similar to the aroma, I like the balance here with the contrasting flavors of citrus and roast. Well done.
IPA like body (medium) with visual expectation of something a bit fuller. Carbonation is right. Medium length citrus and chocolate finish.
I wouldn't put this in the Black IPA category personally but I could be talked into it - this is a unique and tasty beer on it's own.
Very good.

It poured a deep black color with a small amount of a head. The smell is a mild citrus and the taste is also a mild citrus that blends well with the dark ale. You can see a fair amount of carbonation on the side of the glass. Overall this was well made and an enjoyment to drink.

Can to becher pint glass.
The appearance had a dark brown color in the pour but yielded more of a darker close to black sort of color in my glass. Nice finger and a half's worth of eggshell white foamy head. Slid off to leave some speckled semi-foamy lace.
The aroma captured a beautiful blend of dark and milk chocolate layers flowing into some citrusy/orange juicy fruity tones. Subtle dark roast and coffee tones.
The flavor seemed to mesh well balancing between roast, dark chocolate bitterness and citrusy hop/orange rind-like bitterness. Subtle aftertaste of roasted coffee tones and citrusy/orange hop character.
The mouthfeel was almost medium bodied but seemed to sit just a touch under. Mostly a decent sipper. Some hop harshness scathing my tongue. Good carbonation. Some dryness. Finishes dry with some roasty tones and dark toast, subtle hints of dark chocolate.
Overall, as a black IPA, I'd say it works. I'd have again.

Can dated 12/18/18 into a tumbler.

L: Pours black mahogany with nearly 1 finger of medium density cream-colored head with moderate retention and left sticky windshield lacing.

S: Roasted malt, chocolate and earthiness. Subtle piney aspects once it warms a bit.

T: Does a decent job coalescing the hoppy, roasty, and chocolate flavor profile, though the hops are definitely left in the background a bit, this improves as the beer warms. Finishes with moderate bitterness, lingers slightly on the palate.

F: Medium bodied with medium carbonation, slick on the tongue and the swallow.

O: Its an easy drinking dark ale, but could use a bit more prominence of the hops for my palate and preferences. Makes for a nice lunch beer on a rainy day.
