Poured a murky caramel with a big head.

English malt the main smell, some bread.

Bready, toasty, earthy, dry finish.

Mouthfeel a little watery.

An interesting concept, and easy drinking, but lacking the punch and flavor of a full strength barleywine.

The room is dark and the keg is almost empty, so my input is not to be taken too seriously. The Sweet I was expecting fell a little short and notes of 9-volt and hazelnut die Quickly, leaving plenty of room for the dry leaf mildew aftertaste.
A fine pint for the price!

L: hazy, almost murky, chestnut brown under a lacy 1" tan to cream colored blanket of foam with good retention

S: big bread aromas, dried fruit, traces of caramel, bread crust dark sugars and spice

T: Mildly sweet malt leads the charge bringing caramel, toffee, bread, bread crust, dried fruit, spice, anise and traces of cola

F: body is medium full plus and the carbonation is medium low

O: By dialing back a little on the alcohol and hops this beer allows a better appreciation of barleywine's big malt character. This is a great beer but it is a little murky and i miss the alcohol

From a 16oz can:

Appearance: Slightly hazy brown-amber, good head.

Smell: Slight roasty aroma, earthy.

Taste: Earthy, mild sweetness. Bit of citrus in the finish.

Overall: Wasn't sure exactly what to expect with this beer, unfortunately it didn't taste too good to me. Not particularly sweet or rich like an English BW, not hoppy like a US BW, mostly reminded me of a mediocre brown ale or maybe an earthy, less fruity dubbel.

Forging forward with the contradictory name, this beer pours a dark ruby amber with a large beige head. The aroma features mild chocolate, raisin, date, and rose. The flavor is sweet and bitter, with raisin, walnut, date, fig, honey, banana bread, balsamic vinegar sweetness, and just a hint of nutty bitterness at the end. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with soft carbonation. Overall this beer is an excellent and balanced, with rounded and enjoyable flavors. I hate the style name, please just call it an English Strong Ale, or even an American Strong Ale, but it is a tasty little beer.

Previously Bent Paddle released an Imperial Kvass, now a session Barleywine. They are trying too hard to be clever. Not sure what makes this session as it is over 7% ABV. It is an English Barleywine with the use of English malt and yeast, except Bent Paddle hopped the shit out of it and ruined what could of been a nice beer.

Looks good with a dark amber hue and a large frothy head. Smells nice as well with citrus and caramel notes coming through. But the taste is a mess. Bitter, hot, astringent, and it cannot decide what it wants to be. The citrus hops do not compliment the English malt and fruity esters. Body is really solid and nicely carbonated. This beer like the previous two Valve Jockey beers, was a disappointment. Eventually they have to make one that I will enjoy as I love all their other beer.

drinking this beer was like watching a pretty girl fart in church. it looks great, but then does something really wrong that might turn you on a little bit but you know that's just not right.

garnet colored. decent, foamy head that sticks. looks great.

but the citra. why would you do that? it just overwhelms everything. a melon-y, kind of dry bitter barleywine is just not what i had in mind here.

mouth is well carbonated. medium body. not too thin, not too thick.

a sessionable barleywine just sounds like a strong ale to me. but this is even more of the same thing that everyone's churning out these days. blah.
