Charleston Brewing Company - Smoked Border. 6.1% ABV. Served in a stout glass on tap at Black Sheep Burrito & Brews in Charleston, WV.
Look: Pitch black body, arriving with small half finger khaki colored head. Leaves sticky lacing behind after dissipating,
Smell: Nice smokiness from the beech wood smoked malt used. Backing it are hints of roast coffee and caramel. Not really any profound aromas aside from the smoky malts. Semi sweet smelling.
Feel: Thin body, but very light at the same time. Nice amount of carbonation to balance.
Taste: Nice smoky/toasty malt flavors up front, with the coffee and caramel coming in near the back end. Also has a minor sweetness to it, with counteract the smoky flavors nicely.
Overall: First Smoked Beer style I've had, and apparently the first review for this beer. This has a nice balance to it with the smoky and toasty malts, with some sweet caramel and coffee acting on it. If I can sum this up, it's like combining a Porter and a Milk Stout. The only downfall is that it doesn't have a very strong aroma or taste, like its masked a bit.
