Handsome clear amber with plenty of foam in the glass. They call this a "rustic bock lager" which is not adequate preparation for the first sip. This is surprisingly tart with a distinct acidity and nothing to resemble any Bockbier you're ever had.

The overall effect is carbonated soured fruit juice. Aroma is something like fermenting raspberries with a whiff of vinegar. Distinct oak flavor and quite clean tasting in spite of the startling sourness.

Aslan documents the brewing process if you'd like to read all about it, but it starts with lager yeast and oak casks for a few months, with Champagne yeast at bottling time. They conclude with its "very unique acidity." Truer words never spoken. So I say the yeast had a lot of help and I call it an American Wild Ale. It's all quite fascinating but to be sipped gingerly. From 500 ml bottle from the beer store in Bellingham.
