this is gorgeously executed, as so many of the funky and woody aslan beers are, a real treat to find on tap, glad these guys seem to be picking up in boise! called oud brown on the list where i had it, seems like this is the more common name for it. aged two years in wine barrels, super cool! deep color on this, way less red and amber than a lot of these, like its actually deep brown, almost a porter color to it, lots of roast apparent, and a pretty inch of contrastingly white foam, pretty pour, almost looks nitro. the nose on this is great, not as sharp and vinegar forward as a lot of them in this style space, which immediately makes it more gulpable to me. heavy red wine but not too tannic or acidic which is nice, roast and chocolate and nuttiness from the grain, light smoke but no real bitterness, raisin and dark dried fruits, dates and figs, cherries and sweetened cranberries, dark chocolate for sure, awesome. bacterial and funky both, but more tart than anything, lemony a little bit, cool with the dark grain checking it a bit. the red wine adds a ton to this, and the oak is just ad forward, vanilla there picking up cocoa in the roast, coffee notes too, it all goes so well together, way mature, super refined, and not as acidic as most of these. medium body not decayed by the pucker, light somehow too, and way drier than most of these, almost a totally different texture than is conventional, really smart, love how woody and dark it is, amazing take on the style, as good as just about any in the game, especially from an american brewer, bravo!
