Saint Archer Brewing Co. has launched journey series, teaming up with globally recognized lens-man and brand ambassador, Jeff Johnson, to create a new session ipa as the first volume of this ongoing beer release series. This gluten reduced*, straight- forward, dry-hopped California-style session india pale ale is eminently sessionable. Crystal malts provide a backbone to showcase the bright, citrus, piney notes of Cascade, Chinook, Citra, and Simcoe hops, giving this beer a ton of flavor.

* This beer was fermented from barley, a grain that contains gluten, and crafted to reduce gluten. The gluten content of the product cannot be verified, and this beer may contain gluten.

Clear pale yellow brew. Quite sudsy in the glass and frothy on the tongue. Very light. the first gulp seems promising. Then the bitter aftertaste drags on. What is that other taste-- cinnamon? It's appealing at first and then gets strange. Malty and oddly sweet with something like burnt walnuts.

Interesting they have not done a No. 2 in this series. This one is all about the outdoor branding that dominates their website. From the 12 oz can purchased at Total Wine. Dated NOV2221 on the bottom, but I don't know when they start their "best by" countdown.

12oz can. BB 01/18/21 (I think). Sample from the brewery.

Bright, crystal clear, pale golden with a thick foamy white head that drops quickly to almost nothing. Soft, fruity nose. Thin-bodied, crisp, and dry. Apple-y fruitiness with a watery, grassy, and citric hop flavor. There's a touch of sticky pine, too. No real malt backbone. Just a bit of breadiness. Finished bone-dry with a messy astringency.

Everything about this beer seems muted with not enough of anything to keep you interested. Weak, watery, and unbalanced. And at 5.5 percent alcohol by volume, this isn't much of a "session" IPA. It's also gluten reduced for no apparent reason with a weird gluten disclaimer. Hard pass.
