On tap. Murky amber color with beige head. Aroma has some dank hop notes, pine resin and candied orange. Taste is bittersweet and resiny with toasted malt and bread crust notes. Medium plus body with medium carbonation. A more classic IPA approach.

Armando Otchoa "Hangover Rasta" (Hungary). "India Red Ale." Served on-draught at Good Beer Only into an Anderson Valley branded pilsner glass. Reviewed from notes. Expectations are high given the quality of the other beer I tried from this brewer(y).

HEAD: 1.5 finger wide head of off-white colour. Nice thickness and creaminess. Good soft complexion and good smooth, even consistency. Plump and supple. Retention is quite good - about 6 minutes. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

BODY: Dark copper-brown. Nontransparent. Nontranslucent. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. It's definitely an atypical appearance for an IPA, and is of below-average vibrance.

Overall, it is a decent appearance for an IPA, but isn't ideal. For an India Red Ale, it could look better. I'm optimistic, but it isn't unique or special.

AROMA: Divine toasted malt character, amber malts, faint burnt bread crust, some herbal hop character, cream, and faint pine. One might even say pine car freshener...

It's an inviting aroma of average strength overall.

No yeast character, alcohol, or other off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Lovely. It has fine characteristics of something like an Irish Red - the rich toasted malts, the kiss of breadiness - and merges them with notes redolent of a good Imperial Red Ale - nectary and piney hops, floral character, and cream.

TEXTURE: The softness is superb, and couldn't be better suited to the flavours here. It's slightly creamy, which complements the softness, and together the two attributes cooperate to make this a very approachable and even refreshing brew. Smooth and wet. Well-carbonated. Aptly thick. Has a near ideal amount of heft and weight on the palate.

This texture is very well executed, and complements the taste quite well. Good overall presence.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

OVERALL: Very drinkable and enjoyable. It's a definite success given its stated style, and Armando Otchoa continues to impress me. I just met the man while reviewing this at Good Beer Only, and I'll be giving him my compliments shortly. I came to Budapest expecting to love Hopfanatic, but it seems that Armando is easily the best brewer here - and humble too. I'd definitely recommend this beer (and brewery) to any discerning drinker; it's damned impressive. I'll murder this glass, and will want more afterward. Lovely stuff. Even the choice of style is an indicator that this brewer is not chasing trends; it's not the generic pilsner schlock of old-time established Hungarian macrobreweries, and it's not the Yank-envy ersatz beer of purported Hungarian "craft" breweries trying to replicate the success of IPAs. It's just a damned effective India Red Ale with lots to offer the discerning drinker. Recommended. I'd absolutely get it again.
