Poured from 500mL bottle into a tulip. Bottle 404/450. This is billed as an "amber stout aged for 19 months in cognac barrels".
Appearance: ok, they call it a "stout" so I added it as a "stout". But this thing is a rich, dark, cloudy amber hue with a finger of fizzy tan foam atop. What even is an amber stout? It looks like an old ale. I'm kind of at a loss here.
Smell: OK, forgetting the strictures of style here, this beer does smell really really good. Raisin, tobacco, dates, figs, plum; all the good stuff I really like. Stout? Absolutely not. But yummy!
Taste: the raisin, date, plum, and tobacco really pop when that slightly sharp cognac element comes into play. Why did they bill this as a stout? This is an excellent beer, just an inappropriately-advertised one in my opinion.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a light carbonation and a pretty lightweight mouthfeel, surprisingly. It has a bit of creaminess but nothing really special.
Overall: I think when you put "stout" on a label (even "amber stout"), you set a certain expectation. This is an excellent beer, if ... bizarrely-classified.
