Appearance: Too much foam on the pour but the ecru head settles in at four inches, capping the cloudy root beer colored liquid; not surprising that the retention is great as is the lacing

Smell: Burnt rye toast, tobacco, earthy tones and a hint of pine

Taste: Burnt rye toast and tobacco with a hint of underlying sweetness that doesn't quite verge on caramel; in the mid-palate, the hops present pine and earthy/woody tones and perhaps a hint of mint; spicy rye elements emerge in the finish along with a return to the malt flavors

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A black rye IPA...now that's creative; a little too burnt in the malt bill and some problems with carbonation (that didn't impact the mouthfeel, fortunately) are slight demerits from an otherwise fine beer

Bottled April 16, 2014 ... A Black Rye India Pale Ale

A - Pours a murky brown to borderline black body. It has a one finger light khaki head with great lacing/retention.

S - Smattering of rye, black malts, roast character and hops in the background.

T - Pine hops hit you right off the bat. The rye and roasted malts come through to greet you and then you're left with a bitter finish.

M - The body seems a little thin and the carbonation lacking. Smooth body, just a bit weak.

O - I dig it! The rye along with the roasted malts and IPA character really mesh well.
