L: Pours jet black, thick and heavy. No appreciable head forms but there are hints of bubbling activity in the body of the brew. A faint ring of khaki lacing presents around the edge of the snifter. Held to the light, a
S: Heavy notes of bourbon barrel and whiskey right away. This is followed by hints of dark chocolate, burnt sugar, dark fruit, roasted malt, oak, and char. Notes of vanilla in the back end. Light hops.
T: The first sip you notice the imprint of the bourbon barrels on this beer. Whiskey, alcohol burn up front. This transitions into a more complex beer as it warms. Notes of chocolate, oak, charred malts, wood, and hops. Fainter flourishes of dark fruit and burnt sugar in the finish.
F: Full-bodied. Thick, silky mouthfeel with a moderate degree of carbonation.
O: Make no mistake, this a very bold Russian Imperial Stout. The flavor needs a little more refining, as the beer somewhat accosts your taste buds on the initial sip. However, the beer improves as it warms even though it still has a slightly overpowering alcohol aftertaste.
Overall, pretty good but not great.
