Got this one from a trade with Siddfinch a while back. Cheers man!

From a 750 into a snifter
Bottled: November 12, 2014
Bottle 132 of 150
Cellar Series vol. 1

APPEARANCE: Slow foamer on this one, unfortunately. That’s never a good sign. Pours out transparent black and yields a 3 finger, medium looking, fizzier, foamy tan head with good retention. Fizzes down to a full wispy cap. Black body with minimal carbonation evident. Slight wisp and ring remain with some touches of lacing down the glass. One you get past the foamy beginnings and the fizzy head, it’s a decent looking imperial stout.

SMELL: Thank goodness this smells perfectly fine. Definite bourbon and oak on the nose with a distinct cacao nib aroma as well. Pure chocolate, sweet cream and vanilla, with notes of toffee and butterscotch. Very much like the base beer, bold and boozy, with pure cacao notes on top. Quite a nice nose for sure.

TASTE: This is definitely Resolute with cacao nibs on top. It’s basically got all the same, rather disappointing qualities the base Resolute has but with a welcome touch of cacao on top. Still lots of alcohol and woody lumber up front with notes of bourbon and vanilla. Cacao plays a role as well. Still perfume-like and cheap in the spirit department. Medium finish of alcohol, lumber, some vanilla, toffee sweetness and cheap booze linger a bit. A bit of cacao shows up in the aftertaste as well but not as much as elsewhere in the party. Like the base beer, it’s not nearly as good as the nose and is rather alcoholic and woody.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Prickly on the palate for sure, more weight than the original version though, goes down a bit harsh and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Some heat lingers for sure. Okay. Better than the base Resolute.

OVERALL: In the end, this is simply the regular Resolute with a hint of cacao on top. I guess that’s no surprise, but unfortunately the disappointing performance of the base imperial stout are not helped by the addition of cacao nibs. I’m afraid the spirit barrel is just too cheap and/or simply too perfume-like for my tastes. Comes off as paint thinner. It’s also too woody, like you just licked a piece of lumbar. We’ve all done it at some point in our lives. The feel is a bit better but this variant foams out and fizzes around annoyingly in the glass. Weighing the positives against the negatives, this one is perhaps a touch better than the regular variant, but neither are anything to write home about. Thanks again SiddFinch!

By far the weakest Resolute variant in the line up. Not to the level of the base beer or the other varietals.
