a tasty and quite hoppy red here, a very nice example of the style. its pretty dark red copper in the color with a gorgeous off white head on it with great rise and retention. the nose here is bold but well balanced. the grain is well layered, deeper crystal malt and some specialty reds, might even have some oats in here, as there is plenty of body happening. sweet and buttery, caramel and toffee notes going on with that side of it. the hops are robust and american, a little spicy, maybe a cascade thing happening, but there is also a really sturdy grassy bitterness that balances this well. the flavor matches the nose, lots happening but all really well proportioned. this tastes almost concentrated, like a real long boil cooked it down and intensified the grain complexion, which is a great feature here. you would never know its as strong as it is, the alcohol doesnt come through at all. a little sweet in the finish, but its bitter too. long finish as well. overall an impressive example of the big hoppy red, the best one of these i had yesterday, and i had several. will be looking forward to trying more beer from these guys, this was real nice. rich and smooth.
