In agreement with the original review. This is highly bitter, somewhat harshly so, on the initial sips--full of pomelo and bitter melon flavors, with little balance it out. Barrel notes and malt sweetness only emerge once your bitter receptors are a bit numbed, but they do eventually emerge. I still wouldn't say this works well at that point, but I'm happy to have tried it.

Tasted from a large bottle (1 pt, 6 fl oz) bought in Raleigh, NC. The Gizmo website says they released 100 bottles at the brewer's whim.
L - Medium golden color and hazy. Decent white head persists, along with lacing on the glass.
S - Aromas of West Coast hops, lower levels of sweet malt and a hint of bourbon. Aromas not overly strong or assertive.
T - Very good American IPA hops flavors with a good malt backbone. Overlaid on those are strong oak and bourbon flavors, which seem to tone down the hops bitterness.
F - Medium to thick body. Creamy, moderate to strong carbonation. Strong alcohol presence. Strong hops bitterness, but it seems smoothed out and moderated by the barrel aging.
O - This is a big, complex beer. The flavors and bitterness seemed a bit harsh on the initial pour, but it mellowed out and got more interesting as it breathed and warmed.
