Appearance: Pours a translucent coffee color with a two finger head; splashy lacing
Smell: The coffee is pronounced in the aromatics with toasted brown bread and cocoa powder supporting; a hint of pecan
Taste: Unlike the aroma, the toasted brown bread flavor is prominent and the flavors in the aroma are much less expressive; there is a little coffee swirling around but the bready tones dominate from start to finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: I was hoping for bolder flavors after smelling the aroma; drinkable, but not that different from a typical brown ale

Saved by the Brew – Brown Ale – Deep River Brewing Company, Clayton, NC
Remember the tributary series I was talking about? Remember that pickle lager? This is a part of that exact same 2019 series from Deep River! As I was leaning away from Stout to loving IPAs, brown ales were a nice intermediate stop along the way. Anyone can enjoy a brown ale. Brown ales are typically sweet and malty with little variation in between. Not quite like a box of chocolates, you always know what you are going to get, sort of. This brown ale has a lot of local Raleigh coffee used in the brew for added coffee flavor. Saved by the Brew is 5.2% alcohol by volume with no international bitterness unit information. I am not sure if my palate has been cleansed from the previous Gose, but I would say this beer is slightly tart on the nose (actually) with a malty, coffee finish. Overall, Saved by the Brew is a decent beer from Deep River that I would have again if it was not on me. I will give the Saved by the Brew a 7.4 out of 10.0, and Beer Advocate gives this one an 8 with one review.
