16 oz can into pint glass
Pours a medium muted orange with fluffy white 2 finger head. Lacing is spotty
Aroma is fairly strong, spicy and earthy, clearly moving away from any sense of tropical hops that are the rave now. It definitely grabs your attention.
Taste is smoky, maybe peaty. Bitterness comes through fairly strong and there is almost an astringency to it, but it strangely works well. Malt is somewhat sweet but definitely thin to almost no malt backbone, just an intense mix of boiling and finishing hops with a sweet mid-taste. I would swear this thing has rye in it but I can't find anything on the can saying so.
Mouth feel is a little watery and un-sticky but a smoky zing remains through into the aftertaste.
Overall this is a surprisingly different beer than what I thought I was getting - but I'm not disappointed at all. It is very drinkable if you don't mind a smoky flavor. Keeping it thin on malt is a questionable choice IMO but I respect the choice because it is an experience I've yet to have. I would drink this again but I'm not sure I would go out of my way to find it. I may be changing my tune this time next winter when as I reminisce.
