Draught @ Brewpub: This one poured an almost opaque, black color. There was about a finger of a tan head on it that doesn’t linger long. There was some lacing. It had a somewhat lighter aroma. Roasted malts and coffee notes predominate. Perhaps some fruits and spices too. The taste is OK. A bit lighter in body. Some roastiness and coffee notes. A bit of bitterness. An OK beer.

Poured on-tap and served in a tulip, the beer is a dark, ruby-tinged, brown coloring with a foamy, dense, tan-cream colored head. Clingy as you swirl the glass. This is a beautiful beer, almost too much to drink, but I'll take one for the team. The nose is dynamic and layered, with earthy notes, fig, peat, and smoke. More subtle, you get some chocolate and coffee notes. Well balanced. Flavors of coffee in the backbone, bitter and roasty, with a nutty and date sweetness overlay. Thin, dry, smooth bodied, with a ton of lacing along the glass. The aftertaste is smoky and earthy. Bittersweet linger on the finish, which is slightly effervesced. Very balanced, earthy brew.

On tap at the source.
Comes to the table a solid black color with a thinnish tan head that shows some retention. Smells of roast and chocolate with a bit of caramel and hints of earth, anise, pepper, and clove. The flavor is sweet roasty malt up front with a bit of licorice and bits of clove and mint.Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick chewy mouthfeel. Slightly different take on a stout with Belgian yeast. I enjoyed this but it wasn't my favorite of the night.
