Very hoppy aroma. Really great hoppy initial taste. Then the hoppyness falls flat. It's kind of like a more alcoholic and lighter hop stoopid.

On tap at the brewery – 04/12/14
Full pint served in a Tulip style glass

Listed as their new hop bursted IPA – 6.9%ABV

A: Golden caramel amber color body with some orange tones and a mostly lucid look. Thick topping of ivory suds shelters over for a substantial amount of time. Good amount of sticky dots and webbed lacing climbing down the glass.

S: The nose brings a flurry of gooseberry and grapefruit zest aromas and has me immediately thinking of Citra. Juicy and resinous with softer notes of pine and dank floral herbs. Some mild pale malt sweetness lies underneath all the fruity hops and there is no trace of alcohol to be found. Really impressive hop aromas on this one.

T: Tastes follows much of the same with some intense gooseberry character and zesty grapefruit. Mix in some orange blossoms and evergreens with a supporting balance of a light malt cracker presence. Finishes out danky and herbal while staying in good harmony with the other flavors. Very minimal sugary sweetness and any caramel malts are nearly undetected. The beer has an upper moderate amount of bitterness that achieves a nice drying affect with a semi resinous linger. Alcohol is incredibly well incorporated throughout. This is quite nice and unexpected.

M: The mouth feel is light to medium and sticky with a fair amount of carbonation giving a lush froth. Some peppery bitterness achieves a very dry finish with a decent amount of oily linger.

D: This was an incredibly nice surprise from Refuge whose mainstay has been more Belgian styles. Lots of fresh Citra flavors and really well balanced. Sector 9 IPA is quite refreshing and definitely worth checking out.
