Listed as their Rampart Red Ale aged in Bourbon Barrels
6.3% ABV 46 IBU
On tap at Refuge Brewery – Temecula, CA
Notes from 08/18/13 - 4oz taster
A: Light crimsoned color body with more of an amber hue to it and some honest clarity. Half finger of low hanging light khaki foam and some minor dots of stick decorate the glass after each sip.
S: Malt forward aroma of nutty bread and toasted biscuit met with a light Bourbon vanilla spice. There is some underpinning pine and citrus hop presence but it is relatively muted out by the other aromas. Decent nose with some interesting barrel notes coming through.
T: Nice malt base of nutty toffee and toasted biscuit meets a light bourbon vanilla spice character. Very interesting mix. Touch of hoppy pine presence with a moderate amount of hop bitterness and earthy oak. Finishes with a spiced kick and a dash of alcohol embellished by the bourbon spirit presence. Interesting selection to put in a barrel. A little on the fence with this one, not sure it really works.
M: Light to moderate body with a bit lower carbonation. Creamy overall with a touch of drying. Slightly wetter finish.
D: Very interesting brew. Not sure if this one really works. The base beer is relatively light in body to hold up to the barreling treatment. Although the Bourbon is rather subtle here. Interesting character and not overbearing with the Bourbon notes. Well balanced in that sense. A nice to try.
