On tap at Refuge Brewery – Temecula, CA
Notes from 08/18/13 - 4oz taster
Listed as there Mystique Belgian Strong aged in Syrah Barrels – 10.4% ABV
A: Pours much like the base beer with a light rusty look. Unclear and low visible carb with just a thin khaki layer of low retaining foam head. Some tiny dots of stick but pretty minimal.
S: Smells of caramel and toffee malts with some subtle Belgian spices and a light vinous character. Pretty mild aroma all together actually.
T: Tastes similar to the base brew with a hint of red wine grape coming through. Toffee malts, dried dark fruits, and a touch of Belgian yeast character. Somewhat delicate on the barrel notes however with a light vinous flavor and touch of woodsy tannins coming through. There is a low amount of bitterness to the beer and again the alcohol is very restrained here. Not bad. Nice balance but pretty mellow flavors. Hard to really even pick up on the barrel treatment here.
M: Moderate body leaning towards the heavier side with whay seems to be a little lower carbonation level. Creamy and soft on the palate with a slight drying finish. Pretty clean on the exit.
D: This was a nice experience but a little ineffective I think. The Syrah Barrel character is very subtle and a little lost at times. Still maintains some nice balance and flavors. Fun to try.
