Mahogany brown, with a tall, proud, ivory head with good retention and a tight, almost creamy texture. Smells malty, for lack of a better word, but then that is the best word, I think. It smells like dark malts, like those Caribbean malt drinks you get in Brixton. Malty, malty, malty. But of course there are hops as well: bitter orange, guava, potpourri. The overall impression is of chocolate-covered candied peel. Nice.
The flavor introduces itself with a whack of bitter coffee, chocolate, Supermalt, and toffee. Quickly the hops take over, spicy and brash, with notes of bitter herbs, lemon, black tea, and vermouth. Tasty at first but kinda off-balance the more I drink, and there is a boozy alcohol note, unnecessary at 7.3%, that intrudes on the malt and hop flavors and makes this taste vaguely medicinal (like NyQuil). That said, the chewy, soft, smooth, juicy body makes this pretty easy to drink, even if it is a little disappointing. Possible food pairings: blue cheese, mince pies, Thai red or massaman curry, pasties, patties, and empanadas.
