Poured from a crowler into a pint glass.
L: Pours black with a tan head, which disappears somewhat quickly. Very little lacing.
S: Smells roasty and bitter, like bitter coffee.
T: Surprisingly little malt flavor. Starts with some roasted bitterness that transitions to a slight hop bitterness. Ever-so-slightly spicy. Bitter aftertaste. Quite bitter for a dark beer, distinct from anything else I've tasted.
F: Nice and thick.
O: I enjoyed the first few ounces a lot, but I found it a bit too unbalanced to enjoy it for much longer than that. I definitely still recommend trying it, though, if you like dark beers and/or IPAs.

im not sure the name is original, but this is easily the best beer i have ever had from mountain toad, no contest really. its amazing. plenty of rye with the unmalted roasted barley gives this a bitter and spicy grain flavor that is very unique, and the lack of sweetness in the middle makes it stand out form the crowd even more, not even an attempt to balance in the traditional way, instead blazing a new type of balance, with maybe some oats or some torrified wheat, we get a lot of body in this, and the intensity of the grain flavor almost mellows to the feel not a flavor, which i find just tremendous. so smooth drinking this thing is, and so dry in the finish, i could make a day of it in all four seasons. i love the abv being kept low, it lets me have more of them and still get back from golden alright. i dont think rye gets used enough in dark beers like this, so this is an excellent illustration of what it can contribute. great recipe here, really splendid.

On tap at Mountain Toad. Dark black, some head, looks fine. Aroma is a bit of malt but I can't really detect the rye. Flavor is roasted malt and just the slightest bit if sauciness which I assume is the rye. Overall this is not a bad beer but it also doesn't wow me.

Quite a nice brew right out of the gate from the Toad. A dark brown/black pour. Head is a bit spotty, but does look nice. Off white. Pretty good lacing.
Roasty aroma blended fairly well with the hops. Coffee comes out on top, but other aromas catch on: chocolate, raisin, pine, earth.
Flavor is a balance of coffee, raisin, pine and black pepper. The end has a subtle chocolate to it. This beer would probably be a wee bit filmy if it weren't for the solid hit of hops. It's a bitter stout, which works well with the finish of chocolate mentioned earlier. No doubt, it's dry. Perfect for sitting outside on a slightly chilly Colorado evening.
