The fascination that we all have with sour ale has led us to demand overly fruity, overly sour and overly clean versions to the point where there's not much deliniation between what's a gose, what's a berlinerweiss, or what's a wild ale. Hi-Wire attempts to restore order to historic intent by making a gose like they did in the good 'ole days.

Hi-Wire Gose pours a milky golden color that's set in a firm cloud of haze. As a moderate ivory head mounts the rim, tart and savory aromatics roll onto the nose with fresh yeast, bread, sea air, cider and a kiss of perfume. Early sweetness is scant but takes the shape of sourdough bread, saltwater taffy and whole wheat on the front of the tongue.

Sourness overtakes sweetness on the middle palate as a light remnant of breadiness remains to support the sourness and spiciness of the ale. English cider, hints of white wine, lime, lemon and gooseberry all are noticably tart yet never overly sour. Creamy and bready early on, the taste renders to a wafer-like crispness that's rounded with a soft and savory salinity that keeps the flavors bright and elevated though the palate trends dry. Orange and perfume keep the session fresh even when the funk of damp burlap and wheat germ play on the late palate.

Medium bodied for sour ale but certainly drier than the typical ale, the moderate acidity is buffered by a lingering malt breadiness. A savory saltiness plays delicately on the finish while a taste of white wine, stale bread and citrus extend in a fast fleeting aftertaste; and in quintessential Northern German gose fashion.

12/26/17...pours clear, light dark gold, if thats such a thing. Touch of foam atop. Watery taste. Very slight sour. Citrus. Very light body, and iffy sour. Lots of water. Small flavor. Unremarkable.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 4/24/2017. Pours slightly hazy pale golden/ztraw color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lightly tart lemon, lime, peach, pear, red apple, melon, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, white bread dough, light lacto funk, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, pale malt, and salt/spice notes; with solid strength. Taste of lightly tart lemon, lime, peach, pear, red apple, melon, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, white bread dough, light lacto funk, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Mild lactic tartness and coriander bitter/spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, peach, pear, red apple, melon, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, white bread dough, light lacto funk, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, pale malt, and salt/spice flavors; with a great malt/tart/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Lightly increasing dryness from tart/bitter/spiciness. Medium carbonation and light body; with a very smooth, fairly grainy/acidic, and lightly saline balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.2%. Overall this is a delicious gose. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, pale malt, and salt/spice flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink; with the mildly acidic/drying finish. Very flavorful and not watery feeling for the low ABV. Not as sour as I expected, but this is a spot on gose. Very well balanced fruity yeast/lacto, coriander, salt, wheat/pale malts. A very enjoyable offering, would be a perfect summer beer.

Pours a clear straw (can says hazy?) producing 2 fingers of fizzy, foamy, short-lived, white head that leaves no surface cap, collar ring or lacing. Minor effervescence streaming from the bottom. Aroma is lactic, lemon/lime, coriander, grainy wheat, fruit/berry & mineral in a briney background. Taste is fruity for the style where no fruit has been added, tangy, salty, lemon/lime, coriander, wheat, leafy floral & faint mineral. Finishes slightly tart & dry with leafy floral, lime citrus & brine predominant with less fruitiness than in the front. Aftertaste is dry, lightly tart, lime citrus & brine . Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation, crisp, faint prickle & very dry.
