Beer lovers do love themselves some orange beers. And the timing is perfect for Hi-Wire to roll out a Sour Smoothie ale that hits a summery crescendo with Orange Creamsicle.
Pouring a light golden orange and cast in a cloudy hue, the beer builds a loose honeycomb froth while drawing the nose in with the brightness of orange, wine spritzer, light cream, cider and light pastry sweet scents. As to its initial taste, the flavors open with those lightly toasted pastry flavors with cream candy, sourdough and light orange soda pop.
As the sourness rises over the middle palate, the beer's promise of sourness seems to only turn tart with the undercurrent of fermentation delivering its own lime, lemon, green apple, white grape types of natural acidity. As the flavors of orange expands across the tastebuds, its punch is moderate in tone before buffering with the vanilla, cream and lightly candied balance that plays out on the late palate.
Medium bodied and somewhat fuller for sour ale, the ale is brisk, refreshing and mostly clean, but fans of sour ale will certainly want a drier, crisper and more acidic taste while fans of oranges will want more radiant, stronger fruit flavor. This ale is caught between but will still provide a taste that will keep beer fans coming back all summer long.
