Teaming up with the spice marketeers of Spicewalla, Asheville takes their 10W-40 series to the holiday side with the not-so-subtle addtions of cocoa, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, clove, vanilla and lactose to capture the essence of both gingerbread and hot cocoa just in time for the season.
Firmly textured and basically black, the Gingerbread Hot Chocolate version of 10W-40 releases a mid-density froth that gives the beer a whole heartedly hot chocolate and coffee appearance. Its decadent chocolate, toaty and caramelized scent is balanced with the spice twinge of holiday spices, chocolate and vanilla cream bring a malty sweet upstart that extends on the early palate in a true cookie form.
As the sweetness evolves, its simplicity turns to chocolate, coffee and cream to suggest the likeness of an espresso heavy cappuccino. Trending spicy with bold spices, a bitterness of hops take the balance to a broad, peppery and woodsy smokiness with the slight numbing of holiday spices mounting. The roasted flavors and burnt toast emphasize a coffee-driven session with chocolate and gingerbread swirling away on the late palate.
Full bodied while still holding a suggestion of drinkability, its textures trend dry by the warmth of vodka-like alcohol, cocoa powder and spice additions. A long finish of cocoa, coffee and pie spices suggest many things of the coffeehouse fame, but with that undeniable holiday kick.
