Appearance: Wow, Black River Coffee Stout is pretty damn dark for a 5% beer. It appears pitch black in the glass, with only a thin sliver of deep red along the edge of the glass when back lit. A rough pour yields a large tan coloured head that displays average retention at best and doesn’t leave any lacing.
Smell: Mmmm, this actually smells pretty good. There is a good amount of black coffee, mocha, dark chocolate, some roast and a little sweet caramel.
Taste: Sadly the flavour isn’t a patch on the nose. There isn’t much in the way of coffee, with the flavour dominated by some roasted malt and a watery bitterness. As the beer warms a rather odd earthiness appears.
Mouthfeel: Meh, light bodied and somewhat watery, with a high level of somewhat harsh carbonation.
Overall: Another mediocre local beer. The nose was pretty good, but everything fell apart after that.
