"Weizenbock Mandarin." Bottle No 539.
BOTTLE: Cute snub neck with a wide body - a bit like a chianti bottle. Unbranded pry-off crown cap. Classy label. 33cl format. Brown glass. Best before: 27/7/2016. Purchased at Getranke Oase in Munich.
6.90% ABV.
Reviewed live as a weizenbock per the label and name. Served chilled into a tulip and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption. Expectations are average; this is my first beer from this brewery.
HEAD: Occupies ~65% of the glass with its ~11cm wide head. Soft consistency, with a nice evenness. Fluffy and light-looking. White in colour. Retention is quite good - ~10 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Hazy turbid orange of above average vibrance. Nontransparent but translucent. I see no yeast/lees floating within.
Appears well-carbonated. It's a nice looking weizenbock, with a brighter colour than most - as well as more vibrance. It'd be easy to mistake for a hefeweizen, actually. I'm eager to try it.
AROMA: Citrusy. Orange flesh, a blip of grapefruit rind, noticeable (but seemingly balanced) hop bitterness, fresh wheat, some spiciness (possibly from yeasty clove esters), mango, faint apricot...yeah, Mandarina Bavaria is showcased nicely here alongside the usual Halleratuer hops. Yeast profile could bring more to the table ester-wise, I suppose. The Munich malt and wheat backbone comes off fresh and inviting.
Suggests a pleasant weizenbock with enjoyable Mandarina Bavaria hop character. Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Lovely. Fresh wheat, Munich malts, Mandarina Bavaria hop character. Fruity in hop character, with citrusy orange, mango, and juicy apricot. Orange dominates, and as well it should. Yeast offers some faint fruity esters, including a hint of banana.
Coupled with the soft refreshing mouthfeel, this is a really enjoyable weizenbock.
Texturewise, it's smooth, wet, light to medium-bodied, and aptly carbonated. The mouthfeel could be juicier, and it does get a bit dry towards the finish (which is unnecessary), but overall execution is rather good.
A gestalt whole of a beer with plenty of cohesion and excellent balance. This is perhaps about as assertively hopped a weizenbock as you can get without compromising balance, and the brewers couldn't have chosen a more appropriate hop to showcase than Mandarina Bavaria, which fits into the otherwise traditional build fascinatingly well. Really a pleasant enjoyable brew, with no alcohol presence or off-notes getting in the way of its flavour.
OVERALL: Lookout, Schneider Weisse - there's a new kid on the block. This is my first Eiswerk beer, and I'd count it amongst the best weizenbocks I've had thus far. Wonderfully drinkable, with adequate complexity and good depth of flavour. A must-try when in Munich (but I guess that's just saying join the club). I have to seek out more of Eiswerk's beers...this is impressive work.
