Calwer-Eck-Bräu GmbH & Co. KG

I was recommended this place from the bartender at Schlafly's in St. Louis so I tried it out. In a word; relaxing. This is a brewpub a block from the fußgängerzone where there is still plenty of "people watching" to take place, but it's much quieter than the "main drag."

The Braumeisterbier in 1.5 liter pitchers will satisfy any beer aficionado worth his salt.

Fresh beer, enjoyable conversation (from the waitstaff and passersby), and decent food all equate to an enjoyable time.

An easy walk (5-10 minutes) from the hauptbahnhof, too.

Visited on a sunny, warm Sunday afternoon in September 2009.

Easy to find and a short climb up a few stairs away from the shops and cafes that line this end of Calwer Str at ground level.

Dark and interesting layout, a kind of enclosed box sits in the centre of the large single room, which is split by the said square area into almost different areas. The actual bar is to your right as you way in, you have to pass the food to get there (if like us you visit on a Sunday, more later).

There were a few families eating and us two just drinking, no problems though, plenty of room and they were happy for us to taste their beers.

I liked the place, loads of wood, strange light shades and an 'Arty-Farty' feel to the whole set-up. I tried three different beers from the taps and each one was most enjoyable, the good lady enjoyed her two too.

Back to the food; on a Sunday they do an 'All you can eat buffet'. Wish we hadn't had a half-chicken and chips at a beer garden earlier. The cost was very reasonable (8 Euro per person at the time) and the selection of both hot and cold food was very impressive. I had a good look even though we were full, the food included 'Swine-Haxen', White Bavarian sausages, Meat Balls, Ribs, a choice of spuds, cakes, fruits, salads, veg and almost anything else Germany is good at producing.

If we were to re-visit Stuttgart this would be my Sunday daytime choice for beer and food.

I went in January 2008 with my father. We were stopping by Stuttgart on our tour of southern Germany and were eager to sample some local brews. Calwer-Eck was randomly chosen (probably from Rick Steves), and we visited in around the middle of the day. It wasn't too busy, and we were instantly served at the bar. The establishment had a neat 19th century Bohemian-inspired wood-styled interior. The brewhouse was easily viewable.

Although there weren't a ton of beers available on tap, the two I sampled - Naturtrübes Pils (unfiltered Pilsener) and the Braumeisterbier (Brew Master's Special) were excellent and tasted exceedingly fresh. I recall to this day the splendor of the hop flavor and aroma, which was probably the best part of both. Certainly very small batches.

I highly recommend Braumeisterbier, which I believe was a special recipe lager, maltier and more flavorful than the pils. The preceding reviewer mentioned their seasonal selection (Saison bier), which rotates regularly, I believe.

Stuttgart is not frequently visited by tourists, but it is a nice small city and the ancestral home of Mercedes-Benz. If you happen to be there - stop by Calwer-Eck.

A brew pub located near the west end of the Stuttgart tourist area, Calwer-Eck is located upstairs. There is a sign at the entrance, but you have to be looking for this place or you will miss it. The bar is beyond the meal buffet and has about 10 seats. The rest of the restaurant is fairly spacious. The brewing equipment is in an enclosed room and is the same equipment found in most other european brew pubs. Their claim to fame is their Saison; they have three other brews on tap that are typical of this part of Germany. I thought all of their beers were done quite well.
