Reviewed from notes. Visit occurred in Dec 2012.
Weiden is a picture-perfect Bavarian market town near the huge US/NATO training base at Grafenwohr. I had the fortune of being billeted off post and found that this incredible place had rooms within the military lodging rate.
This hotel/restaurant/brewery is located right on the market square in a sprawling, centuries-old stone building. It has multiple entrances, modern and luxurious hotel rooms, and a multi-storey eating area with several levels of service and food selection. Although all that may make it sound like a mass-market tourist trap, the truth is that it is pulled off in a dignified, understated way and the only impression is of hearty, old-fashioned Bavarian hospitality.
The brewery and bar are in the lowest basement level, easily accessible from either the hotel area or the street. It is a bright, Open, comfortable space with whitewashed stone walls and lots of bright copper fixtures, including some beautifully maintained brewing equipment. Simple but delicious bar food is available here. They had 3-4 of their own beer on tap. I don't recall if they had guest beers or not, because I was interested in trying their in-house styles. I came in three different times during a week-long visit and each time there was at least one member of the wait staff who spoke excellent English. They were friendly and efficient. The prices were very reasonble.
I found their beers to be well-made and true to Bavarian traditional styles. I was not disappointed by any I tried. Their best when I was there was the seasonal Christmas Bock.
