Brewed with locally sourced malt from Admiral Maltings in Alameda, Do You Know the Way… is an easy drinking, refreshing, and well balanced California Common-style lager. A soft, toasted bread-like malt character is balanced by a mild, woodsy hop flavor with just enough hop bitterness for balance. Do You Know the Way… is named after the Grammy Award winning song “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” which tells the story of a person making their way back home to San Jose after failing to find success in the Los Angeles entertainment industry.

This CAN is my answer to Happy Loads of New (Mainly) Lager Beers Sunday (Week 718), But What Now/Next?!? I received this one through Tavour, with whom I have since broken ties. It was not so much them as their inflexible shipper, but since they either could not or would not go with a different shipper, I had to say goodbye.

From the CAN: "A California Common lager brewed with Admiral Malts"; "About This Beer [-] 'Do You Know the Way to San Jose' tells the story of a San Jose native making their way home after having failed to make a career in the entertainment industry. This song was an international hit for Dionne Warwick and resulted in her first Grammy Award."; "Our 'Do You Know The Way' ale [?!?] features malt from Admiral Maltings, a local maltster based in Alameda. An American original, the California Common was originally developed in Northern California. Cheers!"

Well, which is it, you South Bay jagovs? A Lager as identified on the front of the label, or an Ale as identified on the reverse? I spent the best 2.5 years of my life as a sailor on NAS Alameda, probably where Admiral Maltings now exists.
8=( I had my first apartment, revolving girlfriends, season tix to the A's, a key to my uncle's apartment in SF, I was nightclubbing 4 - 5 nights a week, I got trained to be a cop, life was good.

I began with a Crack! of the vent, followed by a slow, gentle Glug since the hour was growing late & I did not want to have to deal with a potential mess. I was rewarded with the unbidden formation of just better than two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with good retention. I was distracted, but it left me some nice lacing in its wake. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was definitely malt-driven, rather sweet & more bready than toasty. Mouthfeel was surprisingly big & full. I let it roll around in my mouth & on my tongue, allowing it to warm so that I could get a better measure of it. The taste remained more malty than anything else, although I will grant them the "mild, woodsy hop flavor" mentioned in the Notes. I might have glossed over it, had it not been for the Notes. Finish was semi-sweet, pleasant, but not really my bag. YMMV.

Clear, dark amber body; thick, creamy head; very little rising carbonation. Rich, caramel malt aroma; some grassy hints with a hint of spiciness. Excellent toasted grain flavor; a bit sweet; spicy bitterness. Medium-heavy body; tingly on the palate; semi-sweet finish.

A very tasty lager, malt forward with a spicy hop presence.
