BOTTLE purchased at Craft Beer Store in Hamburg (across from Ratsherrn) earlier today. White & blue label. Maroon branded pry-off crown cap. 33cl format.
A: Head is ~3cm wide and of pale khaki colour. Average consistency and complexion. Retention is ~4 minutes.
Body is a nontransparent but semitranslucent dark brown-black. Unbecoming of the style.
It's a decent overall appearance for a Belgian strong dark ale, but leaves much to be desired.
Sm: Biscuity Belgian yeast (saccharomyces), caramel, toast, brown bread, bready malts.
I find no dark fruit or esters.
Aromatic intensity is low for the style. This suggests a simple, shallow brew with only a passing resemblance to the intended style.
T: Dark malts. Bready malts. Dry Belgian yeast. Brown bread. A blip of dark fruit.
Simple, shallow, and poorly executed given its intended style. Unbalanced. Poorly built.
Mf: Oddly dry, which really reduces drinkability. Smooth. Full-bodied - though there's no real flavour to back up. Overcarbonated. Unrefreshing.
O: A swing and a miss at a Belgian (strong) dark ale from Ratsherrn. I'll finish the bottle with some effort; the noticeable alcohol presence and absence of flavour and quality make this somewhat difficult to drink. Forgettable, unremarkable schlock.
D+ (2.33) / AVOID
