this beer was the surprise of our maple beer night this weekend, one i didnt expect a ton from, but one that stood up to maple beers from the likes of lawsons and evil twin and funky buddha and some other heavy hitters, what a treat this is! an imperial version of their maple coffee, aged in bourbon barrels. i love it being on the drier side at the end for how much maple is in here, and i like the lower alcohol relative to its peers in the style, i think it has way more drinkability because of these features. the bottle looks awesome, and the beer inside looks nice too, when we break through the gold wax we get a matte deep brown beer with a fast settling head and some good viscosity, but not too intimidatingly thick or anything. strong and bitter coffee on the nose first, well in front of maple and whiskey for me, and way more subtle than their regular maple coffee stout, some more of it must have fermented out, but the flavor isnt lost and this is still plenty maple forward, so nice with the coffee bitterness, the relationship between the two is as good or better here than any other beer we had this night. the barrel adds a lot too, as much oak as whiskey, slight vanilla and earthiness, some dark chocolate there from the malt as well, jumps right into the maple coffee whiskey complex. some tobacco and spice notes as it warms, a little warm but not at all too boozy, seems really well refined. hands down the best beer i have had from odyssey to date, and one i hope to drink again. really impressive, stood up shockingly well to some much more acclaimed brews!
