So, I’ll be honest, I might have purchased this one solely due to the name, but I am glad I did!
Barleywine gets its name from the high ABV which one would normally find in a wine. As the drink is made from grain, and not fruit, this puts it clearly in the beer category.
This one is a dark brown with a bit of a reddish hue to it. It pours smooth with a nice little head, fading off to a lighter film. Aromas coming in strong of Pecan Pie, it is amazing how Bacchus managed this. Right down to the burnt sugar and butter.
Very sweet slow sipper. This hides its alcohol somewhere within but it is not forward in the taste, more of an afterthought. First up is the slight tingle on the tongue which moves into a sweet sticky date taste as it passes over the mid-section. There is a nuttiness as well with some spice and salt but the aftertaste hits quickly changing the profile back to a sweetness.
This is all a bit of an experience, one I am better for. This is an excellent evening topper.
Cheers
