330ml bottle poured into tulip

L - pours a frothy large head several inches thick. Copper orange, clear with a trace of floating sediment

S - sweet malts dominated by a distinctive dark rum aroma

T - slight smokiness, caramel malts, grassy hops and hint of vanilla towards the finish. A rum booziness is present in the background throughout.

F - moderate carbonation, heavy yet smooth bodied, boozy feel to it - feels like a stronger ABV than it says on the bottle.

O - the rum influence is a definite presence in the smell and taste, but an enjoyable smoky character to this beer as well. A sipper more than a session

On pour its a big three finger rising creamy head and thick lacing, the smell is a subtle touch of rum, hops, caramel and oak, the mouthfeel is full bodied creamy and warming with a big hit of rum firstly then a touch of caramel malts and finished with a big hoppy bitterness and overall I think the rum is too prominent but like the idea cheers.

Pours dark amber with a large, white head.
Nose shows lemon, lychee, soft sweet malt and candy floss with a subtle oak character.
Flavours are less impressive, with stale grain, cardboard-like notes, oak and a slightly harsh rum character.
Interesting idea.

"Rum and Oak IPA" brewed for GABS festival in Melbourne, May 2014. Tried there on tap.

Pours a golden colour, quite cloudy with cream-coloured head of medium foam. Looks nice.

Smells oddly chocolatey. Vanilla tinge to the malt but largely cocoa-rich for some reason; notes of oak on the back as well. Quite sweet, no real IPA edge.

Taste is hugely vanilla. Loads of sweet vanilla character coming off the oak which is right there up the wazoo. No hops, just tastes sweet and oaky and broadly woody. Nice tasting beer with lots of character, but really, IPA?

Body is a little thick, but allows a touch of tingly carbonation through which cuts through quite well. Touch of booze.

Not bad, but would like more hops to cut through more and make it an IPA. Nice enough drinking though.
