Poured from a growler, courtesy of good ol' UncleJimbo...
Appearance: dense, dark brown color, becoming clearer, with soft, reddish tinges, and blessed with a wonderful, off-white, spongey, creamy, bubbly head.
Aroma: oooo! Spicey and sweet, and ...yum! The ginger stands out assuredly and rests on a yeasty, cookie-ish cushion. Actually, the ginger gets bigger as it unfolds and is distinct and enticing.
Taste: hops blaze the palate, and malt keeps pace. The honey and ginger seem to meld on the tongue and create a uniquely mellow sweetly spiciness that lolls about on the palate, distributing deliciousness everywhere. There's also a carbonated feel to it, leaving a cola-ish association, as well as further flavors, some fruitiness, nuts, bright, crisp and tasty. Caramel malts are hard at work here, I think.
Full-bodied, full-flavored, with a distinctly flavorful, long-lasting finish.
I have a hard time reconciling this as a porter, though, for it lacks many of porter's basic flavor characteristics, and for that matter, I'm leery of any kind of flavored porter, for why tinker with a perfect product, I say. (Oddly,l rarely quibble over flavored stouts, go figure me out.)
But, just seen as a richly and imaginatively flavored dark ale, well-fashioned for winter, this is tops. The taste is nearly addictive, and reminds me of Anchor Our Special in it's utter uniqueness, and unmatchable drinkability.
Honestly, if I lived in the area, I'd haunt the place while this was around!
Cheers, Jimbo, this was a good one!

Sampled on tap at The Tap. Also tastes good from a growler.
This ale poured a dark, chestnut color (almost opaque) with creamy, tan foam that coated the glass. The smell was a sweet, malty (hint of caramel), and aromatic ginger aroma. The taste was sweet and malty (light caramel and mollasses) with a large dose of peppery ginger and a hint of fruitiness. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with medium body and moderate carbonation. The fruity, gingery flavor lingered nicely. This was a very, very nice winter ale, and is extremely drinkable and addictive.
