Lifted some of the lighter weights with this one on 4/9/2006. 16-oz. pint pour in a shaker glass at Redbones.

Skim of head to the brew, with little stick noted; settles down to no head at all. Medium mahogany hue that is crystal clear and sleeping; gorgeous to look through the other side to see the patterns on my holding fingers. Nose is soft with some light smoke and char, a nice, low malt presence, caramel sweetness, and a touch of sandalwood. Crashing crystal malt on the mouth, crisp to a “T,” with some serious candy sweetness going on too. Not overly done with the caramel notes; just the right amount of malt and sugar. Alcohol is almost completely hidden.

Very nice; could drink many of these.

Enjoyed this one on tap at Redbones....this I like to see.
Arrived a dark rust color with less than 1/4 finger of tan head...disappeared quicky with just a thin sheet to remain for the duration. No lacing as I worked my way though the pint....that's right...pint!
This one smelled so damn good even before I took a sip...I could smell the sweet malt from the second he placed it down. A great scotch aroma lifted to my nose as well and I knew I was in for a real treat.
Taste was insanely good...a huge malt profile sweetening this one up, but had enough hops to balance it out for the most part. The scotch was so flavorful that I paid no attention to my meal...it had to wait until I finished this one. Alcohol is totally masked.
Mouthfeel was medium-bodied and the carbonation was perfect...drinkability drops just a bit due to the sweet finish.
Overall, a great example of the style and one I'd go for anytime I see it available.
Go local!

Clean brown beer with ruby highlights. Has a small off white head and some nice lace. The first whiff gave me a nice smokey note. Followed by a smooth sweet malt character. That same sweet malt character starts out the taste with a nice toffee note. followed by a hint of smoke and a nice light bitter snap on the finish.

Note: I have since read the the brewer did not use and peat malt in the brew. So I guess my smelling and tasting of smoke was all due to an over active imagination.

A friend pointed this one out to me, and I had to smack myself for not noticing it sooner. Firstly, it's a pretty beer with a beautiful brown color that reminds me of an old mahogany table. It's a pretty smelling beer too filled with toasty goodness.

It's a great tasting scotch ale, because it starts of with the roasted toasty goodness with a hint of sweetness, and then backs off. The only downside might be that it goes down almost too easy for a heavier beer. Seriously, this is a beer that is completely on the mark for its style, and has a wholesome homey goodness to it that makes me want to curl up next to a fireplace and just enjoy. I certainly hope to have some time to get back out to Haverhill to have some more.

Pretty brown color that seems to shine when held up to the light. Very slight head that all but dissappears and all but no carbonation. Nos is peaty and just a little bit of wood. Also, kind of sweet with a candy presence.

Solid wee heavy. Very sweet at first but quickly followed by a slightly biting smokey presence. Lots of caramel and toffee candy. Roasted malts really come out as a peat-like flavor. I like the hint of smoke best about this beer. Very full mouthfeel that is just a tad syrupy. Thick and cloying. Very dry at first but as it warmed up (or I adjusted to the beer) it did not seem as dry and rather more of the syrupy I mentioned. Very nice beer to be sipping on this snowy evening.
