Nico Kölsch

Served in a Pilsner glass. Crystal clear, vibrant yellow. A ton of carbonation running up the sides of the glass leading to about an inch of fluffy white head. Big Pilsner malt nose. Crisp, freshly ground grains, freshly cut, grass and sour lemon. Flavor follows suit . Crisp and light body. Well balanced lemon and lightly malted grains. Finish has a more than moderate amount of carbonation tingle and the grassy/lemon flavors carry over to the aftertaste.

Pours a clear golden color with a white head that leaves solid lacing.

Smells of crisp pilsner malts with hints of breadiness and leafy hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though not quite as crisp. Smooth light malts up front are joined quickly by light citrus hops. Midway through slight amounts of breadiness come into play before being pushed aside by leafy and lightly earthy hops that carry through to a moderately bitter ending. Mouthfeel is good, with decent carbonation.

Overall this was a solid and easy-drinking beer that's well worth a shot.

Pours a very clear, greenish-yellow with very little head. In dim lighting, it almost appears to be a very light neon. I can see straight through the glass.

Deep grain and bready malts in the nose. Lemons shine through, but that elemental gran quality comes to the forefront. A very minor hop presence.

The taste is likewise dominated by a grainy, wheat, biscuit flavor. There is a ton of flavor in this beer. In the forefront, that refreshing, pale wheat flavor comes through very strongly. Citrus sweetness with a touch of sourness, along with a little hop bitterness, linger in the finish. To call this refreshing would be an understatement.

Light without being watery, the mouthfeel is spot on. A very easy to enjoy, drinkable beer.

A great representation of the style for Haverhill. I've been drinking a lot of Kölsch this summer, and this one may very well be my favorite.

Full disclosure: I fell in love with Kolsch while spending a Spring in Cologne doing trade show after trade show. In Koln you order by true tray and get these 4 oz pours in tumblers. You settle in for the night and keep them coming. This is the ultimate session beer.

It is also, in my opinion, the seed that has spawned many of the summer offerings that we get now in US. With a crystal clear straw appearance, light roast and citrus backbeat, this is a great warm weather beer.

At last year's ACBF, Jon Curtis and I discussed his Kolsch and our love for it. in fact, it was one of my top 3 from the show.

Try this and I am sure you will enjoy it. This is a great example of the style, even better than you can get in Koln!!

Nico Kolsch, Enjoyed on cask at the brewpub. This really hit the spot, served at the right, room temperature. Apricot fruit colour, aroma, and taste. A few lace dots, and a little white caesar head. Delicate sipper, although less than average mouthfeel it was a soft mouthfeel. A litle IBU, a little sour fruit power.
